Introduction

What does it take to future-proof Ethiopia's national payment infrastructure? For the leadership team at EthSwitch, the answer began with a flight to Singapore.

In a significant milestone for Ethiopia's financial sector, i-Capital Africa — through its Cross-Border Solutions program — successfully organized a five-day agile leadership and organizational development workshop in Singapore for EthSwitch's CEO, Board members, and Company Secretary. The program was delivered in collaboration with Excelerate FZCO.

Why Singapore?

Singapore is widely regarded as one of the world's most advanced financial ecosystems, a city-state that has built a globally competitive economy through deliberate innovation, strong governance, and forward-thinking leadership. For EthSwitch, which sits at the heart of Ethiopia's digital payment infrastructure, benchmarking against Singapore's model was a strategic choice, not just a travel destination.

The goal was clear: expose Ethiopia's national switch leadership to global best practices in banking transformation, payment systems, agile governance, and AI-driven financial services and then bring those insights home.

What the Program Covered

The five-day program combined experiential training, institutional exposure visits, and guided learning across six core modules:

  • Singapore's Model of Innovation- exploring how Singapore built a knowledge-driven, globally connected economy and what lessons translate to Ethiopia's growth ambitions.
  • Banking and Payments in an AI World- understanding how artificial intelligence is reshaping financial services and what it means for national payment infrastructure.
  • Impact for National Switch and Banks in Ethiopia - directly connecting global lessons to EthSwitch's mandate and the future of Ethiopian banking.
  • Key Challenges to Transforming Banking- a candid look at the structural, cultural, and operational barriers organizations face during transformation.
  • Agile Leadership in Banking and Payments - building the adaptive leadership capabilities needed to navigate a fast-changing financial landscape.
  • The Executive Brain and Agile Board Leadership - understanding how senior leaders and boards can think and govern more effectively in complex environments.

Inside the Exposure Visits

Beyond the training room, delegates visited three leading institutions that are shaping the future of global finance:

DBS Bank - consistently ranked among the world's best digital banks, DBS offered a first-hand look at how a major financial institution has embedded innovation, digital-first thinking, and agile operations at scale.

Global Finance and Technology Network (GFTN) - provided insights into how Singapore facilitates fintech collaboration and positions itself as a global hub for financial innovation.

Trust Bank - Singapore's digital-only bank offered a compelling case study in building financial services infrastructure from the ground up with technology at its core.

These visits gave EthSwitch's leadership not just theoretical knowledge, but direct observation of how world-class institutions operate - providing a powerful benchmark for what's possible.

Turning Exposure Into Action

What set this program apart from a standard executive trip was its deliberate focus on converting global exposure into local action. Delegates were guided through structured reflection on their organization's digital maturity, prompted to identify their "knowing-doing" gap, and challenged to translate international learnings into prioritized, implementable next steps for EthSwitch.

This approach is central to i-Capital Africa's cross-border learning philosophy, it ensures that what happens in the classroom and on institutional visits doesn't stay there. The program was designed to produce not just inspired leaders, but leaders with a clear agenda for change.

Why This Matters for Ethiopia

EthSwitch plays a foundational role in Ethiopia's financial ecosystem — connecting banks, facilitating transactions, and enabling the infrastructure on which millions of people and businesses depend. As Ethiopia's economy grows and digital finance becomes increasingly central to national development, the capabilities of EthSwitch's leadership team have direct implications for the country's financial inclusion agenda.

By connecting EthSwitch's executives with Singapore's innovation-driven financial sector, this program created a meaningful opportunity to accelerate that agenda — benchmarking global practices, exploring AI-enabled banking models, and strengthening the agile leadership capabilities needed to drive institutional transformation.
