Today, the construction industry is booming throughout the country. However, current construction practices are far from addressing environmental pollution and use of alternative solution. This paper presents a research study conducted at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT) to provide sustainable solution to the construction industry. The study addresses the challenge of construction waste that is produced from concrete demolition.  The study investigates the potential use of demolished concrete from site-tested specimens as Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) material for new concrete production. The study compares the cost of conventional concrete (CC) with Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA). Although the use of RCA has been practiced in the last three decades, an investigation of this material has not been investigated in the sub-Saharan African countries. The recycled concrete can be used for non-structural member and low-load bearing elements in concrete construction. This type of study helps to reduce waste, save cost, conserve natural aggregate, and build capacity through development of mix ratio and considerations in design standards to the Ethiopian construction industry.

Currently, Asregedew is an assistant professor at Bahir Dar University (BDU). Prior to joining BDU, he was an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and a lecturer at Iowa State University (ISU). Asregedew obtained his PhD in Construction Engineering and Management from Iowa State University and Master’s degree from Oklahoma State University. He received his undergraduate degree from Bahir Dar University in Civil Engineering. Asregedew has previously worked as structural engineer in the University Capacity Building Program (UCBP) at GiZ. His area of expertise is in advanced construction management towards data and information integration, asset management, sustainable construction, construction productivity, application of data mining and business analytic tools. Asregedew is a SAS Certified Predictive Modeler and has a SAS and OSU Business Data Mining Certificate. At present, he is an active member of professional organizations like ASCE, ICE and PMI.
