The presentation covers five mineral admixtures permitted by Indian Standard Code of Practice for Plain and Reinforced Concrete, IS 456-2000, for addition to cement and concrete, namely pulverised fuel ash or fly ash (FA), blast furnace slag (BFS), silica fume (SF), rice husk ash (RHA) and metakaolin (MK). Starting with energy conservation, it summarises physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of these admixtures. Quality control and specifying admixtures for concrete are discussed. Different methods of adding FA and BFS in cement and concrete are covered. Hydration, strength and durability aspects of concrete, with mineral admixtures are discussed. Aspects related to interfacial transition zone, permeability reduction, reduced temperature rise, importance of curing are covered. Durability of concrete with mineral admixtures is discussed with respect to resistance towards carbonation, alkaliaggregate reaction (AAR), chloride attack (reinforcement corrosion), external sulphate attack, delayed ettringite formation (DEF) and freeze-thaw action.

Jayant D. Bapat,Ph.D. (IIT, Delhi), stationed at Pune (Maharashtra, India), currently, works as an independent professional consultant for cement manufacturing and concrete. He is a TUV certified CDM Expert in Energy and Environment for Cement Sector.

He was a faculty, Director and Principal at the engineering colleges affiliated to the University of Pune (India). He also worked at senior positions at Walchandnagar Industries Ltd. (WIL) and National Council for Cement and Building materials (NCB), New Delhi. He has also been a technical consultant to leading companies in the area of research, new products development and techno-marketing.

He has over four decades of experience in teaching, research, training and consultancy. His long standing expertise lies in the areas of cement manufacturing, durability of concrete, utilization of industrial and agricultural wastes in building materials and development of new cement-based products. He is an expert techno-commercial negotiator and arbitrator.

He is a reviewer of technical papers for number of international journals and has membership of many professional organizations. He has 51 publications to his credit.

His book, “Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete” has been published by CRC Press, USA, in August 2012. In addition to his consultancy work, he also offers self-development training to young achievers, based on controlled breathing (pranayam) and meditation.
